Special Advisor on Clinical Affairs

Dr. Avery Nathens is a trauma surgeon and Trauma Medical Director at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto. He was Surgeon-in-Chief at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre over 2012-2023.  He holds a PhD from the University of Toronto, and a Masters in Public Health from the University of Washington. He works closely with the American College of Surgeons with oversight of their Trauma Quality Programs and is considered an expert in trauma care with over 550 manuscripts including many landmark papers in the Lancet, NEJM, and JAMA. In addition, he brings significant expertise in the areas of quality improvement and change management. He has been recognized through several awards for his role as a mentor, surgical investigator, educator and contributions to public policy.
