The Big-Canoe Chair in Indigenous Health will honour the late John Big-Canoe, a Temerty Medicine alumnus and trailblazing physician from the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation whose professional mission was deeply rooted in patient-centred care and service to Indigenous communities before his life was tragically cut short at age 33.

Vanessa Gonçalves is an assistant professor in the departments of Pharmacology & Toxicology and Psychiatry, and an associate member of the Institute for Medical Science (IMS) at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. Goncalves is also an independent scientist in the molecular brain sciences department at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).  She leads the MitoNeuroLab at CAMH’s Tanenbaum Centre for Pharmacogenetics.  The lab’s team investigates how mitochondrial dysfunction contributes ageing in mental illnesses and the onset and progression a variety of mental health conditions.

Arthur Mortha is an associate professor of immunology and the Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in mucosal immunology. His lab investigates the interplay between the immune system and micro-organisms that live on the body’s barrier surfaces and generally don’t cause any harm. Using pre-clinical disease models and patient samples, Mortha strives to understand how the microbes in our intestines help protect against or exacerbate infections or chronic inflammatory diseases.

Through his research, Dr. Amin Madani works to improve surgeon performance and patient safety through artificial intelligence and machine learning, and to develop tools that support surgeons in the operating room and enhance patient outcomes. Recently, Dr. Madani reflected on the culture of interdisciplinary collaboration and discovery that drives progress across Temerty Medicine.
