External Education and Teaching Awards

In order to recognize the exceptional contributions that are being made to Health Professions Education, the Temerty Faculty of Medicine conducts two faculty-wide competitions per year to identify excellence in teaching and education scholarship, innovation and leadership.

Through a rigorous adjudication process, the Faculty's Education and Teaching Awards Committee (ETA Committee) makes nomination recommendations to the Dean of Medicine for up to 27 decanally supported education and teaching awards. Successful candidates are advanced to compete for a variety of awards recognizing excellence in domains across medical education at the institutional, provincial, national and international levels.

Nominations for the Fall Awards cycle are now open.

The deadline to submit a nominations is December 11, 2024 at 11:59 pm EST.

Submit your nominations using the external education and teaching awards nomination form. Late or incomplete nominations will not be accepted.

Faculty of Medicine Education and Teaching Awards Nomination and Adjudication Process

Each spring and fall, our Faculty's Teaching and Education Awards Committee has the privilege of recognizing individuals who are making significant contributions to Health Professions Education. We look for faculty members who are demonstrating excellence in teaching, education scholarship and leadership in education, and we recognize their contributions by supporting their nomination to 24 external education and teaching awards. This diverse selection of provincial, national and international awards fall under the following 8 categories:

• Early career achievement
• Career achievement and sustained excellence
• Excellence in clinical teaching
• Innovation
• Equity, diversity and gender
• Mentorship
• Program development
• Faculty development

The ETA Committee, comprised of faculty and learners/trainees and chaired by Dr. Patricia Houston, Vice Dean, Medical Education, reviews candidates for external Education and Teaching awards requiring a decanal nomination and makes recommendations to the Dean of Medicine. The committee seeks nominations for consideration twice per year: once in the spring/summer and once in the fall/winter.

Committee members first review nominations and recommend candidates to the Vice Dean, who then make recommendations to the Dean. The Dean grants final approval for the candidates we’ll be advancing, and serves as the nominator for all of these awards.

The fall call for nominations is made in October, with a deadline for submission in December. The spring call for nominations is made in May with a deadline of late June/early July. We may not issue a call for every award, every year. If you wish to consider someone for an award for which there is no call, please contact us via medicine.awards@utoronto.ca
