There are two qualified and experienced veterinarians at DCM who are responsible for supporting the institutional animal care and use program and are involved in all issues and activities that relate in any way to animal care and use. There is a close relationship between the veterinarian and the local animal care committee. The veterinarian is actively involved in the review of all protocols and projects and the institutional programs involving laboratory animals.
Veterinarians are available to discuss such topics as anaesthetic and analgesic regimes, animal models, surgical methods etc. We recommend that investigators, technicians and other research staff take advantage of this service before the submission of invasive protocols. The veterinarian will attempt to identify problems that may arise during the review process. This may expedite the review process.
In addition, information is available on animal handling equipment, zoonotic diseases, specialized surgical instrumentation and other topics related to animals in research. Consultations can be made over the telephone, or in person.
Off Hours and Emergency Services
A veterinarian is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to provide veterinary services to animals involved in research projects. During working hours, a veterinarian may be contacted by telephone. After hours and on holidays the manager on call should be contacted. The veterinarian will then be contacted.
