Medical Sciences Building, U of TTemerty Medicine’s deep strength in research — from molecular biology and genetics to pharmacology and clinical medicine — was underscored this month in a series of global rankings that set the bar high for the University of Toronto.

Three different global university rankings place the Temerty Faculty of Medicine firmly in the Top 10, including today’s release of the 2021 Times Higher Education subject ranking of 6th in Clinical and Health.

“Particularly in a time of such global uncertainty, the role of the research-intensive university is critical,” says Temerty Medicine Dean Trevor Young. “New insights and discoveries across our biomedical research enterprise are uncovering the way forward on so many questions that are essential to our collective health and wellbeing.”

For the seventh year running, the Temerty Faculty of Medicine ranked 3rd for Clinical Medicine among the world’s top 800 universities, according to the 2020 National Taiwan University (NTU) Ranking of Scientific Papers. The next two Canadian universities in Clinical Medicine, UBC and McGill, ranked variably between No. 32 and 45 over the same seven-year period.

Overall, the University of Toronto ranks 3rd in the world in 2020 — up one position from last year — and remains 1st in Canada. Other biomedical disciplines in the Top 10 NTU ranking are:

•    5th in Pharmacology & Toxicology
•    5th in Psychiatry & Psychology
•    5th in Neuroscience & Behavior
•    10th in Molecular Biology & Genetics

The NTU ranking analyzes scholarly papers and citations using data from a Clarivate Analytics service called Essential Science Indicators (ESI), which is based on the Web of Science. The methodology includes eight indicators related to research productivity, research impact and research excellence.

Drilling down further into biomedical disciplines, U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities Rankings 2020-21 analyzed the research performance of 1,500 universities across 87 countries and placed Temerty Medicine among the Top 10 in these areas of biomedical science:

•    4th in Oncology
•    4th in Surgery
•    5th in Clinical Medicine
•    5th in Endocrinology and Metabolism
•    6th in Cardiac and Cardiovascular Systems
•    8th in Psychiatry/Psychology
•    9th in Gastroenterology and Hepatology
•    9th in Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Medical Imagin
•    10th in Biology and Biochemistry
•    10th in Cell Biology

Overall, this ranking placed the University of Toronto jointly 17th in the world, up one place from 2019, and 1st in Canada. Two other Canadian universities rank in the top 100: UBC (31) and McGill (51).
