About our work

The Office of Inclusion & Diversity (OID) is part of the Office of the Dean at the University of Toronto's Temerty Faculty of Medicine. The mandate of the OID is to support the Temerty Medicine’s commitment to lead in the area of equity, inclusion and diversity, and to create and promote innovative and accountable diversity and equity related programming in collaboration with other members of the Temerty Medicine community as well as external partners, which include the Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network (TAHSN) and community organizations.

Our team

I practice General Internal Medicine at the Toronto General Hospital and serve as the Associate Dean, Inclusion and Diversity, as well as the Interim Vice Dean, Strategy at the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

As a mixed Anishinaabe physician and medical educator, and an education researcher at the Wilson Centre, my focus is on integrating Indigenous and critical perspectives from the social sciences into medical education as well as on organization change and system transformation for cultural safety in healthcare.

I lead the strategic and operational management of the Office of Inclusion and Diversity, including planning and oversight of key initiatives and priorities aimed at advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion within Temerty Medicine’s learning and working environments, as well as broader University and hospital-based strategies.

I am committed to utilizing collaborative, culturally safer and strengths-based approaches to developing EDIIA policies, programs, research and resources for faculty, learners and staff at Temerty Medicine.

Our mandate

The Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s 2018-2023 Academic Strategic Plan names “Excellence through Equity” as one of the three Strategic Domains of Focus. The OID is committed to working in collaboration with all departments across Temerty Medicine to achieve this focus and carry out the OID mandate, which includes the following initiatives:

  • Design programs and policies that support and promote an inclusive learning and working environment at Temerty Medicine
  • Provide advice, guidance, and support on issues of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and human rights on an as-needed basis to all members of the Temerty Medicine community
  • Advise and collaborate with Temerty Medicine learners, staff and faculty members on the implementation of equity and diversity priorities for the Faculty in the areas of admissions, recruitment, curriculum education, and retention
  • Create ongoing opportunities to collaborate within and across other faculties at U of T on matters of diversity, inclusion and equity
  • Coordinate and chair the Temerty Medicine Diversity Advisory Council, a committee dedicated to implementing and moving forward the Faculty’s priority initiatives in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion

Our context

Making inclusion and equity essential components of how we define and foster excellence in scholarship, practice and health outcomes.

There are many offices across Temerty Medicine and U of T that are committed to advancing equity, diversity and inclusion for learners, staff and faculty members.
