Investigator Access to Facilities and Security
Access to the MSB and CCBR animal facilities are restricted in order to assure consistent control and to minimize interruptions that may alter experimental results. Investigators are allowed access to the facilities in which their animals are housed. Each individual must have a card. Security cards must not be shared. Authorized individuals are expected to complete appropriate training before DCM management will authorize access.
If you require security card access to the CCBR animal facility, contact Diana Hiesl (rm 1236 MSB, diana.hiesl@utoronto.ca). If you require security card access to the MSB animal facility contact your departmental business officer.
Procedure Rooms
No procedures should be carried out in the animal rooms except for work being done in a Biological Safety Cabinet. Procedure rooms with additional BSC's are available in the yellow, brown, red and green suites in the CCBR animal facility and rooms 1260 and 1265 in the MSB. The following rooms are available for procedural work in the MSB: 1260 (laboratory), 1268, 1265 (radiology),16. Rabbit or guinea pig work may be conducted in MSB room 1295. Acute studies may be conducted in the necropsy room, MSB room 1367 and CCBR room 47.
Euthanasia
CO2 chambers are located in Rooms 1265 and 1367 of the MSB and Rooms 42G, 36G and 47 in the CCBR, for euthanasia of rodents. Please see a DCM technician for proper use of this equipment.
If you would like DCM staff to euthanize your animals, put a large X through the cage card of the animals to be euthanized. Fill out the required information in the euthanasia book located in your suite in the CCBR or at the drop down shelf outside Rm. 1261 in the MSB. Your animals will not be euthanized until both steps have been completed.
All animal carcasses are incinerated. Dead animals must be placed in a biobag and left in the walk-in refrigerator in Room 1366 of the MSB. In the CCBR place the biobag into the refrigerator in room 47. Nothing but carcasses should be put in the biobag. Do not attempt to put anything into the incinerator. DCM staff will look after all incineration. Biobags are available in all procedure and necropsy rooms in both the CCBR and MSB animal facilities. Supplies of biobags for your lab may be obtained from the DCM office Rm. 1236 MSB.
