For nearly 40 years, Professor Emeritus Michael Wiley inspired, encouraged and educated students. Wiley officially retired in June of 2015, but continued to contribute to the Undergraduate Medical Program’s Structure and Function course though the fall semester.
Since he joined the Faculty of Medicine in 1976, Wiley has also taught students from other health sector programs. Wiley was recognized in 1997, 2008 and 2010 with the W.T. Aikins Award, the Faculty of Medicine’s highest honour for undergraduate teaching. He was also selected by first-year medical classes six times to receive Harry Whittaker Memorial Awards, which recognize encouragement and genuine concern for student well-being and a personal commitment to quality teaching.
In 2010, Wiley was honoured with the Presidents Teaching Award, and in 2013 he was honoured with an Institute of Medical Sciences Graduate Course Director Award. He was also chosen by the graduating classes in 2013, 2014 and 2015 to receive the Dr. E. Mary Hollington Award for teaching excellence in pre clerkship.
As he wrapped up his final live lecture, Professor Wiley reflected on his career.
