Temerty Medicine has more than 100 new associate professors and 50 more full professors following the completion of the academic promotions process for the 2021-2022 academic year.

In total, 104 faculty members were promoted to associate professor and 57 were promoted to professor. Faculty members are promoted based on their impact on their field and are often recognized for their unique contributions. This year, 10 candidates were promoted based on sustained excellence in teaching. Also, creative professional activity (CPA) played a key role in promoting 82 faculty members.

CPA recognizes a variety of academic endeavours that impact medical practice and care and includes professional innovation, exemplary practice, and contributions to the development of the discipline. It provides a broader basis by which to evaluate the impact of faculty members for whom traditional notions of teaching and research aren’t as readily applicable.

“CPA is especially important when evaluating clinical faculty members for academic promotions,” said Professor Trevor Young, Dean of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. “We have individuals who are revolutionizing how medicine is practiced and strengthening their disciplines, but that’s not something you can easily evaluate by the number of papers they have published. Nor is it reflected in their teaching evaluations.”

The promotions take effect on July 1, 2022. An associate professor is generally someone recognized as having demonstrated excellence at the national level, whereas a professor is someone who has demonstrated excellence at an international level.

“I am very impressed by the calibre, commitment, and creativity displayed by the faculty promoted this year. I thank them for putting their names forward for consideration,” said Young. “I am confident they will continue to make a substantial commitment to Temerty Medicine and their disciplines for many years to come.”

“I want to thank the departmental promotions committees, the department chairs, and the Decanal Promotions Committee for the invaluable role they play in the academic promotions process,” Young added. “I especially want to thank Professor Mary Jane Esplen, who chairs the Decanal Promotions Committee and Libby Shirriff, who provides expert administrative support to this process.”
