U of T prepares for fall convocation ceremonies
By Liam Mitchell

The Faculty of Medicine will welcome its newest graduates on Wednesday November 19 during one of eight ceremonies to be held this week as the University of Toronto celebrates its fall convocation.

“Convocation represents the columniation of years of hard work and dedication,” said Catharine Whiteside, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Vice-Provost, Relations with Health Care Institutions. “It is an occasion for the University to recognize our students and also for our graduates to celebrate their accomplishments with their family and friends.”

Among the degrees presented this week will be Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Health Informatics, Master of Health Science, Master of Science and Bachelor of Science (Medical Radiation Sciences).

An Honorary Doctor of Science will be conferred on Sir John Irving Bell, a Canadian-born immunologist and geneticist who holds the Regius Chair of Medicine at Oxford University. He is the former President of the Academy of Medical Sciences and was knighted in recognition of his service to medicine. Bell is one of two Life Sciences Champions for the United Kingdom, reporting to Prime Minister David Cameron.

“Dr. Bell’s groundbreaking research in genetics and his advocacy in support of medical research make him an international leader and a worthy recipient of an honorary doctorate from the University of Toronto,” said Whiteside. “I am pleased that we will have the opportunity to recognize his distinguished accomplishments on Wednesday.”

Convocation ceremonies are streamed live online. For more information on this year’s convocation events, please visit the Office of Convocation website.
