Eight members of the Faculty of Medicine have been named fellows of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, one of Canada’s most esteemed academic academies.

“From researching care for our city’s homeless to advancing new treatments for spinal cord injuries, this year’s fellows are touching the lives of patients across our country and around the world,” said Professor Catharine Whiteside, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. “Through their contribution to research and education, they have distinguished not only themselves, but brought honour to our field.”

The fellows are recognized for their leadership, creativity and commitment to advancing academic health science and are drawn from a wide range of health professions — recognizing work from basic science to population health.

“On behalf of the Faculty of Medicine, I congratulate our colleagues on their well-earned recognition,” said Whiteside.

Election to fellowship in the Academy is considered one of the highest honours in the Canadian health sciences community.

The newly elected fellows are:

  • Douglas Bradley  (Department of Medicine)
  • Michael Fehlings (Department of Surgery)
  • John Floras (Department of Medicine)
  • Richard Glazier (Department of Family and Community Medicine)
  • Gillian Hawker (Department of Medicine)
  • Stephen Hwang  (Department of Medicine)
  • Shaf Keshavjee (Department of Surgery)
  • Thomas G. Parker (Department of Medicine)

The new fellows were inducted at a ceremony hosted by the Academy on September 18.
