Excellence in Community-Based Teaching Awards

Criteria and Process

NOMINATION DEADLINE - MARCH 4, 2024

To acknowledge the significant contribution of an increasing number of community-based teachers to the learning of students and trainees (MD, PGME and Rehabilitation Sciences) at the University of Toronto, the Temerty Faculty of Medicine offers four awards to recognize excellence in community-based teaching.  

Categories

  1. Excellence in Community-Based Teaching (Community Hospital)
    This award recognizes excellence in teaching at a community hospital.

  2. Excellence in Community-Based Teaching (Clinic/Office/Practice)
    This award recognizes excellence in teaching at a community-based physician office/clinic.

  3. Excellence in Community-Based Teaching (Rehabilitation Sciences)
    This award recognizes excellence in teaching at a community-based office/clinic OR community hospital. 

  4. Sustained Excellence in Community-Based Teaching
    This award recognizes sustained (normally 10 years) excellence in community-based teaching, and may include mentorship, the integration of scholarship in teaching, interprofessional collaboration, etc.

Eligibility

The awards are open to MDs and Rehabilitation Sciences Sector faculty members who:

  1. are clinical teachers of Health Professions learners including MD program students, Postgraduate (PGME) resident trainees or Rehabilitation Science Students within the University of Toronto's Temerty Faculty of Medicine; 
  2. teach and practice primarily in the community environment, including University of Toronto Community Affiliate Hospitals or community-based office/clinic setting (not associated with Full Affiliates of the Faculty of Medicine); and 
  3. are faculty appointed within a Temerty Faculty of Medicine Department/Program and have the support of two learners, and either their Department Chair or Hospital Chief. For non MD faculty members, including Rehabilitation Sciences, the appropriate Practice Lead or Manager may sign off on the nomination.

*Note: Self-nominations will not be accepted. Those who have received an award in any of the three categories are ineligible for 5 years. 

Criteria

The following criteria will be considered in reviewing each nominee: 

  • Demonstrated ability to engage  learners;

  • Innovative and creative teaching methods;

  • Contributions as a suitable role model; and

  • Evidence of mentorship.

2023 Timeline

  • January 15, 2024 | Call for nominations

  • March 4, 2024 | Deadline for nomination submissions

  • March 2024 | Adjudication

  • April 2024 | Notification of results

Selection Process

Nominees’ files will be reviewed and winners selected by the Community Based Teaching Awards Adjudication Committee.

Nomination Process: 

The primary nominator will complete and submit the online nomination form and provide all required supporting documents by the deadline. Nominators must ensure the nominee is aware of the nomination. Please note: only 1 nomination, in 1 category per nominee is allowed.

Complete nomination packages should not exceed 20 pages (CV and short bio sketch are not included in this page count) and MUST include:

  • Online nomination form - Please be prepared to describe how the nominee meets the criteria for the award (initial nominator can be different from the nominee’s Chair/Chief);

  • One letter of support from Department Chair or Chief. For those submitting in the Rehabilitation Sector category, the appropriate practice lead or manager may sign off on the nomination;

  • Two letters of support from learners/trainees*;

  • Updated, full Curriculum Vitae;

  • Relevant Teaching Activity Report (Teaching Evaluations/TES** or equivalent);

  • A high resolution photo and short biosketch of the candidate (max. 150 words - suitable for public release). 

*Note: For all award categories, the adjudication committee will accept letters from current and past learners within the last 24 months.

**Note Regarding Teaching Evaluations:

  • 2 - 5 years of teaching evaluations are required for the Excellence in Community-Based Teaching awards categories.

  • 2 - 5 years of teaching evaluations are required for Rehabilitation Science Sector Nominations.

  • Those being nominated in the Sustained Excellence category, 10+ years of teaching evaluations are required in addition to the submission of a teaching dossier.
