This session will describe to attendees how disability and common misconceptions, ableism, and stigma within an academic setting can impact the student experience. The legal expectations and roles for accommodating students will be discussed, including the referral and registration process for Accessibility Services at the University of Toronto. The session will explore possible accommodations in coursework and laboratories and conclude with attendees applying their new knowledge to a variety of case studies focusing on common scenarios that can arise and require faculty support.  Please REGISTER online .

About Maryam Masood

Maryam Masood (she/her) is the On-Location Accessibility Advisor at the St. George Accessibility Services office, supporting students with disabilities in many of the professional health science faculties. Her role involves working with students, staff and faculty in navigating disability-related barriers and academic accommodations. With a focus on inclusivity, her approach is rooted in compassion, as she understands the significance of creating a supportive environment where students feel valued and empowered. She holds a Master of Health Science in the area of Community, Public and Population Health from OntarioTech University. She is a member of the Docs with Disabilities Access in Medicine (AIM) group, which seeks to address disability barriers in Undergraduate Medical Education (UME).  

About Sezgi Ozel

Sezgi Ozel (she/her) is the Lead of the On-Location Graduate and Professional Faculties team at Accessibility Services on the St. George Campus, having previously worked as an Accessibility Advisor supporting primarily students with chronic health, mobility and sensory disabilities for three years. Sezgi is an advocate for and strives to work towards accessibility, inclusivity, and universal design in higher education. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Health Sciences from McMaster University, a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of Toronto, and a certificate in Adult Learning and Development from Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.

About Pearl Levey

Dr Pearl Levey (she/her) has worked in the field of learning disabilities for over 40 years. She has a Ph.D. degree in Special Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education in Toronto, and she has worked as an Accessibility Advisor at Accessibility Services, at the University of Toronto, since 1990. Since 2017 she has been working in the role of Accommodations Specialist for Practicums, Placements and Laboratories. In addition to her work at the University of Toronto, Dr Levey had a private practice in Toronto from 1986 until 2017 where she conducted psycho-educational assessments and provided consultations for both children and adults. She is one of the founding members of the Ontario Branch of the International Dyslexia Association.
