New Online Tool for Research and Innovation Honours & Awards

The Office of the Vice-President, Research and Health Science Education is pleased to introduce a new resource to help our community plan nominations for research and innovation honours and awards. Honours and awards are an important element of faculty recognition, offering national and international markers of excellence as well as career development and funding opportunities. The Honours and Awards Opportunities for Faculty databaseis an online tool on the Research and Innovation website that offers:

  • Permanent entries for over 150 major national and international honour and award opportunities, with up-to-date confirmed or projected deadlines and nomination parameters
  • Browsing and searching capabilities available to any user with a UTORid
  • Filtering by keyword, discipline, career stage, and other parameters
  • Guidelines to U of T’s internal processes for awards that require institutional nominations
  • Information about previous U of T winners, where applicable
  • Contact information for award coordinators within our academic divisions

Deadlines are projected up to two years into the future, aiding planning for opportunities that occur biennially or for which deadlines have recently passed

Awarded annually to scientists for recent discoveries of particular originality and importance to basic medical research.

Sloan Research Fellowships
Sloan Research Fellowships are two-year fellowships awarded annually in recognition of outstanding early-career faculty who have the potential to revolutionize their fields of study.

Tenure-track, but untenured, faculty in the relevant subject areas.

Guggenheim Fellowships
Intended for individuals who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship, the Fellowships provide Fellows with blocks of time in which they can work with as much creative freedom as possible. Fellowships are awarded in support of a single project with a balanced, focused goal.

Lurie Prize in Biomedical Sciences
Foundation for the National Institutes of Health International prize for outstanding achievement in Biomedical Research.

Individuals who are 52 years of age or younger as of January 1 of the year following nomination.

Wiley Prize in Biomedical Sciences
Recognizes breakthrough research in pure or applied life science research that is distinguished by its excellence, originality, and impact on our understanding of biological systems and processes. Particular emphasis will be placed on research which champions novel approaches and challenges accepted thinking in the biomedical sciences.

Royal Society (UK) Fellowship
The Royal Society is the UK's National Academy of Science, a self-governing Fellowship made up of the most eminent scientists, engineers and technologists from the UK and the Commonwealth. Candidates must have made 'a substantial contribution to the improvement of natural knowledge, including mathematics, engineering science and medical science'.

Troland Research Award
Given annually to honour unusual achievement by early-career researchers and further empirical research within the broad spectrum of experimental psychology.

Preference given to researchers 45 years of age or younger.

Wolf Prizes
Major international honours recognizing outstanding scientists and artists "for achievements in the interest of mankind and friendly relations among peoples, irrespective of nationality, race, colour, religion, sex or political views." Nominees must have had a distinguished international career.

In 2022, nominations are expected to be invited in the fields of ChemistryMathematicsMedicine, and Physics and in Painting and Sculpture.

Ho-Am Prizes
Recognizes individuals who have contributed to academics, the arts, and social development, or who have furthered the welfare of humanity through distinguished accomplishments in their respective professional fields.

Applicants must be Korean or of Korean heritage. 

Five awards annually recognize achievements in the following fields: ScienceEngineeringMedicine, the Arts, and Community Service.

Preference is given to individuals whose significant work was recently achieved and who are currently active in their respective fields.

RSC College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists
Enables the participation of early- and mid-career faculty in the activities of the Royal Society of Canada. In an early stage in their career, members will have demonstrated a high level of achievement. The criterion for nomination is excellence, and membership is for seven years.

Community-Based Research Excellence Awards
Recognizes excellence in community-based research, an alternative research approach to traditional academic research that requires incredible dedication, time, energy, and skills. 

There are two awards offered annually; one requires that faculty members be within five years of appointment.

Arthur B. McDonald Fellowships
Recognizes early-stage academic researchers in the natural sciences and engineering and support them to enhance their research capacity, so that they can become leaders in their field and inspire others.

Eligible candidates must have held an independent academic position for 10 years or less as of June 1 of the year of nomination and hold a grant from NSERC.*

Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research
Awarded biennially to up to three young leaders in cancer research who are making significant contributions to the understanding of cancer or are improving the treatment of the disease through basic or clinical research.

Nominees are required to be age 45 or younger on the date of the submission deadline.

Dorothy Killam Fellowships
Supports scholars of exceptional ability by granting them time to pursue research projects of broad significance and widespread interest within the disciplines of the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences, engineering or studies linking any of these disciplines.

Awarded annually to individuals or teams of up to three researchers for outstanding early-career research in a mental health discipline. 

Individuals under 45 years of age or teams up to three recipients under 45 years of age, who hold an MD (or equivalent) or PhD and are affiliated with Canadian academic or clinical research institutions.

Recognizes 2 mid-career investigators working in Canada who in their last 6 active years have produced exceptional scientific research contributions with continued potential for impact on human health. 

Individuals who are 10-15 years past their first independent research appointment working in Canada.

Temerty Medicine Research Excellence Award

The Office of the Vice Dean, Research and Health Science Education is pleased to announce a new internal award for faculty at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, the Temerty Medicine Research Excellence Award. Through a generous endowment from the Temerty family, this award will celebrate the innovative research and accomplishments of our faculty. Two prizes of $5,000 each will be awarded to successful applicants. In addition, the winning applicants will have their submission materials revised and submitted to an external award in the 12-month period following the award competition. The external award will be selected in consultation with the applicant and an awards review committee.
